What is Oculoplastic surgery?

As the name suggests, oculoplastic surgery is a specialist area within ophthalmology which involves plastic surgery specifically in the region around the eyes.  Oculoplastic surgery involves both cosmetic/aesthetic surgery (eg blepharoplasty) and surgery for a range of other conditions.  These include eyelid disorders, lacrimal problems, eye socket problems where the eye needs to be removed, and orbital diseases.

Are you a specialist in this kind of surgery?

Oculoplastic surgery is a complex area that requires advanced training.  Prior to moving to Berkshire I completed two advanced specialist programmes at both Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham and Moorfields Eye Hospital receiving training from some of the country’s most respected oculoplastic surgeons.  Since 2002 I have provided a specialist oculoplastic service privately and in the NHS in both Reading and Windsor.  I am a founder member of the British Oculoplastic Surgery Society (BOPSS) and continue to publish and present research at national and international oculoplastic scientific meetings.

How do I know if I need an oculoplastic surgeon for my condition?

The most commonly encountered problems within each area of oculoplastic surgery are set out below to allow rapid access to more information, together with a fuller list of relevant conditions.  Alternatively, you can use the main alphabetical search facility to find more information on a known condition or the symptom-based diagnostic aid to guide you to the relevant area.  You will find many photos to illustrate the different conditions and, where appropriate, photos to compare the pre-operative and post-operative appearances.
