Eyelid lump or swelling

Cysts are usually unilateral, long-standing and change slowly. Meibomian cysts (chalazion) often become inflamed and swollen and may mimic infections such as cellulitis or stye.

Benign eyelid tumours are also generally unilateral and grow slowly. Malignant tumours grow faster and damage the normal eyelid tissues.

Swelling of the lids may also result from blepharitis, allergic dermatitis or conjunctivitis.

Ageing may lead to loose eyelid skin and bags.

Rare causes:

  / Thyroid Eye Disease
/
/ Orbital inflammation or orbital tumour
/
  / Carotid-cavernous fistula
